ants rule :: 06. 7.03 |

another single ant coming out of the center of the flower. i shot this with the extension tube (EF25) on the 28-80mm macro zoom lens. i am still working out if it is possible to hand-hold and get an image without shakes. so far i am about 50-50 successful.

Feeling small :: 11. 8.02 |
:: photos : |
Sometimes photography is about the little things. Somtimes it is about the big things that make you feel small and insignificant.
Photodude sums it up here:
“But there's a handful of times in my life where I felt the way I did around these Live Oaks; at Monument Valley, Yosemite, Antelope Canyon, the Atlanta Olympics. Places or times of unmatched visual grandeur.
Times that are almost paralyzing, because you find yourself at a place where you can take no bad pictures, and have little hope of capturing all the good ones. Being immersed in a place where you are surrounded by wonderous scenes is both pleasurable and intermittently painful. There's the joy of capturing scenes you love, and the agony of what you know you're missing (there's no way to get them all) or not doing justice to in your compositions, plus the knowledge you may never get back there again. But I dealt with it somehow.”
I can say I had the same feelings about Mono Lake and Alaska and Haleakala and other places I have been and photographed.

39000 ft :: 06. 8.02 |
:: digital elph : photos : travel : |
somewhere over Utah at around 39,000 feet. i am flying back from a trip to virginia for work. i am glad to be going home, but sad because it will be so quiet when I get home without her there. sad too because an old friendship is growing and holds so much new potential, yet i have to go home.
the sun is setting and the clouds are tipped with pink and red. it seems to sum up how i am feeling right now. an endless sky with everchanging clouds spreading out not knowing where they are going or how they will end up. they are beautiful but fleeting and the day is ending.

Holiday Party with Lomo :: 02.10.02 |
:: coworkers : lomo : photos : |
Just got my photos back from our company holiday party - held at the end of January. I took the Lomo and am pleasantly surprised with most of the images. There are some stripy things going on so the quality isn't that great on the darkest images - but the fact that none of these indoor shots were taken with a flash, leads me to want to explore getting a new one of these cameras. The party was fun and one of the highlights was the Extra Action Marching Band from Oakland. They were cool. They were crazy.

Playing a bit with the macro lens on the Canon. Caught up with this butterfly checking out the Mexican Sage. It let me get about 6 inches away before flying off. Haven't been able to catch the hummingbirds yet.

evening light :: 06.28.01 |

Driving home this evening, ready to turn into my driveway, I noticed the tree across the street. The sun was hitting the branches in a way I had not noticed before and the gnarled, windy limbs were like sculpture against the sky. (if only the powerlines were gone)

Infrared Success :: 06.23.01 |
:: photos : |
Experimenting with a 89B Infrared filter on the CanonD30 digtal camera. I spent the day driving around south of San Jose, Ca. The hills have turned golden and the live oaks are all that are green across the landscape. It is hot and the sun burns my skin. This resevoir in Uva (south of San Jose) looks inviting and mysticalin infrared. [CanonD30, 35mm focal length, 8f stop, 4 second exposure, 89B filter tucked behind a UV filter - image reduced in photoshop to 40% original, added green and bumped contrast]

Infrared Madness :: |
:: photos : |
I have been experimenting with a new filter that blocks all but the infrared light. Much like infrared film but no film involved. Here are a couple of early results. Am still working through how you focus when you can't see and what the right shutter speed should be. backyard | pool
