I have recently been reading the works of Jonathan Carroll. His work is slightly on the edge of fantasy, but more in the realm of surrealism. Just when you think you are reading a sort of male version of Anne Tyler, somthing very surreal happens and you know the book has gone off the deep end. He seems to mix dreams into reality and weaves the story around truly believeable events so you don't realize you are reading something that is so absurd. Strange is a good word to describe his work.
I really like his stuff and have read The Wooden Sea, The Marriage of Sticks, Bones of the Moon, and The Land of Laughs over the last three weeks.
I started with the Wooden Sea after reading a favorable review in the paper. This is the most recent (February 2002) and then because I liked it so much, I got the others and liked them as well - although a couple of them are a little darker.
It looks like he has a new book out this month. Can't wait to get my hands on it.
